Ethiopia is famously known as the birthplace of coffee, and this rich heritage is evident in the way coffee grows naturally in its regions. Unlike other coffee-growing countries, where farms typically cultivate one or very few coffee varieties, Ethiopia boasts a remarkable diversity in its coffee plants. This unique characteristic is why most coffee labels from Ethiopia often list 'heirloom' as the variety. One notable example is the Aynalem Kupo coffee processing site, named after its owner, Aynalem Kupo. This site plays a vital role in supporting 200 smallholder farms in the surrounding area of Bareda Kebele (Bareda town) in Gedeb. The farms in this region are situated at elevations ranging from 1800 to 2200 meters above sea level, providing ideal conditions for growing high-quality coffee. The farmers deliver their ripe coffee cherries to the Aynalem Kupo washing station, where they are processed with care to maintain the coffee's exceptional quality and flavor.
